For the latest edition of our Designer Series, we’re excited to sit down with Chantelle Shaw of Shaw Design to discuss her approach to interior design, current trends, and her top flooring picks.
Q: How would you describe your design style?
I love layering textures and incorporating organic materials that improve with age, creating an earthy, raw feel in a space. My aim is to harmonise the interior with the environment, letting the materials shine. It’s all about balance—adding depth through scale and tone while avoiding overcrowding. Of course, each project is unique, so I always focus on understanding my clients' preferences and designing according to their style.
Q: What trends or styles are you currently enjoying?
I’m enjoying designs that emphasise a connection to nature, incorporating natural light and materials to create a calming atmosphere. Lately, clients are gravitating towards warmer, muted tones like terracotta, olive green, and sandy beige. These colours create a serene and grounding feel, making homes more welcoming and restful. It’s great to see this shift toward more nature-inspired interiors.
Q: What are your top tips for creating a design scheme?
Getting to know your clients is key. It often takes a few meetings to clarify their vision, especially when interpreting broad preferences. Once you’ve nailed down the brief, the project flows more smoothly.
Q: Do you have a favourite recent project?
I’m currently excited about a large-scale project that allows me to design every aspect—from exterior materials to landscaping and furniture. The seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, using natural materials and textures, will create a warm, inviting environment.
Q: What are your top flooring picks right now?
For soft flooring, wool carpets are my go-to. They add texture, provide insulation, and are eco-friendly, moisture-resistant, and sound-absorbent—perfect for creating a cosy, welcoming space. My fave at the moment is Bremworth's Te Aroha – I love the rich new colourways in this wool collection like Bronze and Copper.
I’ll always be a fan of solid or engineered timber flooring. It’s beautiful, durable, and anchors a home’s interior. My pick is Creative Floorings - Premium in Half Graphite.
